Sorrento’s failure to beat ECU Joondalup has given Division One leaders South West Phoenix vital wriggle room ahead of the top two’s meeting this Sunday.
While South West Phoenix were dispatching Gosnells City 5-1, Sorrento were involved in an exhilarating if insufficient 4-4 draw against the Jacks.
That means Phoenix will go in to their Round 13 clash with Sorrento six points in front with just four matches still to be played.
Phoenix did all their work against Gosnells in the opening period, as Nicole Suttie, Lara Graham (2), Casey Widdeson and an own goal from Jasmine Hale had them 5-0 in front at the turnaround. Alicia Foster netted for Gosnells.
It was a topsy-turvy game at ECU Football Stadium, where Sorrento raced in to a 3-0 lead, fell behind 4-3, and finished with a draw.
Jayde Keogh and captain Jodie Brough (2) had the Gulls seemingly on track for an easy afternoon as they went three up inside the first 25 minutes. However, ECU had pulled two goals back before half-time through Amy Buchanan and skipper Danielle Maton. Caitlin Quinn and Maton completed ECU’s recovery, then Keogh popped up with her second of the afternoon to tie the game at 4-4.
Away from the battle for the title, Monique Saunders and Rebecca Saccoccio scored in UWA Nedlands’ 2-0 victory at Stirling Lions; Nicole Lombardo got the only goal as Gwelup Croatia celebrated their second win this season with victory over Port Kennedy; Rachel McCaffrey rescued a point for Perth AFC at home to Armadale, for whom Erica Buccella had opened the scoring; while Alice Musa’s opener was not enough for Balga, who went down 2-1 at home against Mandurah City. Melissa Spillman and Amy Terrell were the scorers for Mandurah.
Ashlee Byrne scored twice as Fremantle City maintained their five-point advantage at the top of the Women’s Amateur League with a 6-0 win over Subiaco.
Second-place Northern Redbacks defeated UWA Nedlands 2-1, Tiahna Atkins hitting what turned out to be the winner.
The division’s other fixture finished in a rout, Curtin University thrashing Balga 13-0. Pavitra Prem Kumar scored a hat-trick, with Suria Priya Varatharaja, Sophie Fletcher and Alanna Doig all collecting braces.
