Sorrento top after taming Lions

Sorrento have taken over top spot in the Women’s State League Division One table following a 2-1 victory over Stirling Lions.

Skipper Jodie Brough broke the deadlock on 20 minutes, then just before half-time Courtney Pipes doubled the Gulls’ lead.

Tara Garrood threw Stirling a lifeline six minutes from time but they were unable to salvage a point.

A trio of southern clubs are lining up just a point behind Sorrento.

South West Phoenix are second thanks to a 3-0 win at Port Kennedy, who slip to fourth. All the goals came in the opening period, Lara Graham collecting her second brace of the season and Ava Richards adding the third.

Sandwiched between these sides in third are Mandurah City, who crashed 4-0 at home to ECU Joondalup.

Frankie Murray scored twice for the Jacks, with Jacqueline Nellany and Tinette Van Niekerk also on target.

UWA Nedlands are fifth after their 1-1 draw at UWA Nedlands. Hannah Blackman put Army ahead before the break, however UWA levelled through Jess Pillera.

Rachel McCaffrey’s double was enough for Perth AFC to down Gosnells City 2-1 at Walter Padbury Reserve.

McCaffrey struck inside the opening 60 seconds. And although Caitlyn Lewis’ own goal brought City on terms, McCaffrey wasted no time in scoring what turned out to be the winner.

Goals from Catherine Aftera, Monica Nogor and Rebecca Triplett ensured Balga chalked up a first three points this term as they edged out Gwelup Croatia 3-2.
