Football West has sent three teams to the inaugural girls-only Malaysia Borneo U14s Cup.
The Hyundai NTC Girls Under 13s and two Gold Fields Regional State U14s teams have headed to Kota Kinabalu for the tournament, which runs from 28 October-4 November and involves sides from Australia, Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia.
Tournament Director Scott Ollerenshaw said: "With the explosion in women's football in Asia and the quality that is being shown, we thought it was the right time to start a stand-alone tournament. The boys competition has been running since 2008 and is highly competitive.
"The Borneo Cup is a boutique tournament based upon invitation. There is a big opportunity for girls now coming through the pathway to become professional players and this is an opportunity for them to start off on the right foot."
Football West Football Projects Manager Alex Novatsis said: "It is very exciting to send the girls teams to the Malaysia Borneo Cup, which is one of the best tournaments for young players in Asia.
"We have sent boys teams to the tournament for a number of years, including earlier this month. A girls-only tournament highlights the growth of female football in Asia and we are delighted to play our part.
"Sending the boys and girls teams to the Borneo Cup aligns with the Football West Asian Engagement Strategy, and we would like to thank the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries for its support."
