Academy, Azzurri joint top in NPLW

Hyundai Football West Academy completed a dramatic late comeback to beat Perth RedStar 2-1 and go joint top of the NPLWA - Women's table.

Stephen Walmsley’s side struck twice in stoppage time to follow up their impressive victory over Night Series winners Balcatta Etna with another big scalp and make it two wins from two.

The game sprung into life in the final 10 minutes when Renee Leota closed down goalkeeper Sofia Borg and won possession before crossing for Caitlin Doeglas. The striker saw her first attempt blocked by Daniella Santich but made no mistake with the rebound to put RedStar in front.

The Academy seemed set to grab a point after an inadvertent RedStar clearance saw Theodora Mouithys race clear and slot past home keeper Gabby Dal Busco.

But the visitors were not content with the draw and they claimed all three points when captain Klaudia Houlis followed up Isabella Wainwright's blocked effort to grab a 94th-minute winner.

The other team with maximum points from two matches are Perth SC, who won 3-0 at Murdoch University Melville.

Daisy McAllister was denied by MUM FC stopper Kaitlyn Mohan inside 10 minutes. But the Azzurri were in front moments later when Ruby Marshall’s smart turn helped her evade two defenders before poking into the bottom corner.

An off-the-ball incident a minute into the second half saw Isabella Baldin shown a red card for the home side, and Murdoch’s resistance was broken on 71 minutes when Sam Mathers pushed a pass through for Tamsyn Hannah to fire into the roof of the net for 2-0.

Mathers got on the scoresheet herself in the final 10 minutes when scoring direct from a corner as Perth joined the Academy as the early pacesetters.

Subiaco won their opening game of the season 6-2 at UWA Nedlands.

Subi’s game at MUM FC was postponed last week, so Greg Farrell’s side were hungry to get their campaign under way and they did so with four first-half goals.

They had to come from behind though as UWA took their third lead of the season inside six minutes when Emily Dinsdale’s run and cross down the right was converted by Samara Riches.

Subiaco levelled when Tayna Campos’ free-kick was glanced on by Kayla McCulloch with Kim So-Yi arriving to nod in.

Cass Harvey then played Campos in behind the UWA defence with the playmaker curling home in style to complete the first-half turnaround.

Harvey tapped in from close range for 3-1 before So-Yi breached the home defence again to run in and fire home goal number four for Subiaco.

UWA pulled one back just past the hour mark when Isabelle Dadswell’s pass picked out the run of Melina Franklin who slotted in her second goal in as many weeks. But Subiaco struck twice in the final quarter of an hour to rubber-stamp their opening win of the season and move into the top four.

Harvey raced clear to roll a fifth goal into the bottom corner before So-Yi’s cross from the left was fumbled by Uni keeper Janina Sauer with Campos on hand to cap a good day out.

On Saturday, Janice Kiama’s brace ensured Fremantle City came away with a 2-2 draw against Night Series winners Balcatta Etna at Hilton Park.

Freo were hoping to hit back after their Round One loss at Perth and made a good start when Alex Poad’s blocked shot broke the way of Kiama who instinctively turned and fired home.

Balcatta equalised on 13 minutes when Jaime Duncanson helped Rachel Jarvis’ shot from range into the corner, and the visitors led just past the hour mark when Etna countered quickly from a Freo corner with Jamie-Lee Gale bursting forward, rounding the keeper and scoring.

However, Kiama would strike later in the second period when arriving to force Erin Siah’s corner over the line from close range as Fremantle and Balcatta picked up their first point of the season.
