Ashfield off bottom while Stirling extend lead

Goals from James Sammut and Ali Khateri gave Ashfield a 2-0 win away at Subiaco, their first on the road this season to help them move off bottom spot.

On a weekend where only four Men’s State League Division One matches were played, Ashfield capitalised on Swan United and Forrestfield's postponed fixture to leapfrog both teams.

They got off a perfect start when former Inglewood United and Balcatta midfielder Sammut curled brilliantly into the top corner on nine minutes.

Subi’s Ben Campbell saw an effort go wide after the restart, but the visitors took a giant step towards victory with 15 minutes to play when Ali Khateri netted his second goal of the season.

UWA Nedlands also moved clear of the bottom and in the process extended their winning run to four games with a 3-0 win over Fremantle City.

Adam Carlino forced an early save from Peter Pilkadaris before Noah Shamaki twice tried his luck as the home side started well.

But UWA won three games in seven days last week, and that confidence carried over as they took the lead on half-time when Samuel Carrello bundled in Godfrey Asimwe's corner.

The visitors then added two second half strikes to make it 11 goals in four games and none conceded. Alex Moffatt crossed for Samuel Moffatt to net his fifth goal in four games before Pascal Sedgwick tapped a third into an empty net to complete the scoring.

At the top, Stirling Macedonia extended their lead at the summit to 10 points as they defeated Mandurah City 4-1 and second-place Quinns did not play.

Ian Ferguson's side took six minutes to open the scoring as Alex Tanevski headed in Brent Quick's corner for his sixth of the campaign.

It was 2-0 just past the hour mark as last week's late matchwinner Hugo Snowden latched on to Greg Pellow's long pass and hammered home.

Gavin Knight replaced Snowden with 15 minutes to play and took two opportunities to move to 14 goals for the campaign.

The league's second top scorer finished from Asher Nelson's cross and then tapped in after unselfish play from Shay Donovan for his eighth goal in six games.

Graham Tough scored an excellent looping header late on, but it proved only to be a consolation as Mandurah remain fifth.

Western Knights also capitalised on Quinns' postponement as they won 3-0 against Joondalup United to return to second spot, having played a game more.

Alex Kretowicz's cross was bundled into his own net by Brad McDonald after seven minutes before Golden Boot leader Ciaran Byrne tapped in Dean Hurley's cross for his 17th of the season.

Daniel Olton added a late third in only his second senior appearance with Knights as they moved four points clear of fourth-placed United.

In Division Two, three games were completed with Dianella White Eagles moving 12 points clear at the top following their 6-2 win over Joondalup City.

Stephen Musonda and David Heagney struck inside the first 17 minutes as the hosts jumped out of the gates and Sasa Njegic's made it 3-0 at the break.

Daniel McKenzie scored early in the second period before Joondalup City struck twice through Liam McGurk and Nicholas Koefler to reduce the deficit to 4-2.

But Golden Boot leader Heagney went five clear of the rest with his 13th goal of the season and Njegic added a late sixth as Dianella stretch their unbeaten run to 13 games.

The game of the day saw Balga SC leapfrog Canning City into ninth spot after a 4-3 win at Princess Road Reserve.

Balga raced into a 3-0 lead inside 20 minutes thanks to goals from Bleron Mamudi (2) and Farruh Mavlonov. But by half-time Canning had made it 3-2, before Mamudi completed his hat-trick after the break, before Canning scored again to ensure the match finished 4-3.

Finally, Wanneroo City moved level on points with second-place Kingsley Westside as they defeated bottom side Kelmscott Roos 2-1.

Josh Booysen and Jack Reilly netted either side of the break to stretch the hosts unbeaten run to seven as they held firm despite a late consolation from Robert Justo.
