Perth Soccer Club and Perth RedStar renew their rivalry on Saturday evening as they face each other in Round Three of the NPLWA – Women’s competition.
It’s a meeting between the top two sides from 2022 with Perth looking to claw back a 17-point gap from last year’s league standings. But the Azzurri have started fast this time around, having also come from two goals down to draw 2-2 and win the Night Series on penalties against the same opponents a few weeks ago.
Peter Rakic’s team have built on that first piece of women’s silverware for the club with wins over Subiaco and Fremantle City in the first fortnight, scoring 10 goals and conceding none over those two games.
RedStar, meanwhile, come into Saturday’s match having returned to winning ways with a 2-0 win over Murdoch University Melville last Friday. Jay Coleman and Sarah Carroll got the goals in each half as the defending champions hit back from a Round One loss to Hyundai NTC, which ended a previously unbeaten league run that dated back to late 2021.
A win for Carlos Vega Mena’s side here will move them level on points with leaders Perth, and the 5pm fixture is the second game of a double-header at Dorrien Gardens following the Azzurri men against Perth Glory from 3pm.
Hyundai NTC’s clash with MUM FC and Subiaco’s fixture against Balcatta have been postponed this week, which means there are only two matches across the division this weekend.
The weekend’s other fixture will see Fremantle City host Curtin University at 3pm on Sunday afternoon in a meeting between two sides looking to claim a first three points of the year.
Faye Chambers’ City were surprised in Round One by a young MUM FC team 2-1 at Hilton Park before conceding six to a ruthless Perth side in week two.
Their opponents Curtin are still awaiting their first points and first goal of the season after heavy defeats to Balcatta and Subiaco so far. But they may take confidence from their last away game in Freo having claimed a point in a 2-2 draw in Round 15.
