2025 Challenge Cup: RedStar pair Doeglas and Leota give State Team victory over Glory

The WA Women's State Team ended a nine-year wait today as they celebrated victory in the traditional Challenge Cup clash against Perth Glory.

A first-half penalty from Caitlin Doeglas and a late strike from her Perth RedStar teammate Renee Leota gave Carlos Vega Mena's side a 2-0 win over the A-League Women's outfit at Dorrien Gardens.

Doeglas was part of the Glory side on the only other occasion they tasted defeat to the State Team, in September 2016.

And the one-sided nature of the fixture looked set to continue in the first half, as Rola Badawiya and Susan Phonsongkham hit the woodwork for Glory.

Former State player Grace Johnston was also a threat for Glory, but the State Team defence stood firm. Then just before half-time, WA took the lead through Doeglas’ spot-kick, awarded after Balcatta Etna's Jamie-Lee-Gale had been fouled by a combination of keeper Jess Skinner and Mischa Anderson.

Leota, the 2025 NPLW Golden Boot winner, was introduced on 66 minutes and she forced Skinner into a superb, one-handed save. But the keeper was helpless two minutes into added-on time as the New Zealand international netted WA’s second from a tight angle.

This was Glory's only public hit-out before they get their ALW campaign started against Western Sydney Wanderers on 31 October.
