Danny Hodgson Golf Day fundraiser

Football West clubs and players are being invited to sign up for a charity golf day later this year to raise funds to assist Danny Hodgson in his ongoing recovery.

Danny was returning home from an end-of-season night out with his ECU Joondalup team-mates in September 2021 when he suffered life-changing injuries in an unprovoked attack.

At one stage there were fears Danny may not survive the assault and his parents Peter and Nicola flew from their home in the UK to Perth to be at his bedside while he was in a coma.

And it was a radio interview with Danny’s mum and dad which resulted in Golf Day organiser Ian Thew getting involved.

“Peter and Nicola gave an interview to 6PR that a member of my team heard, where Peter referenced his company in the UK supporting him, Jacobs,” Ian said.

“I am the office lead for Jacobs here in Perth, and this started a chain of events where Peter, Nicola and (Danny’s girlfriend) Jess coming into our office where we discussed the events and raised funds for Danny’s recovery.

“This fundraising is ongoing, but we also invited Peter and Nicola to our end-of-year function and presented them with a cheque of the money raised to that point. During these discussions we also found out that Peter played golf, so we invited him to join our office Friday afternoon golf games.

“These turned into a semi-regular game during which I raised the idea of a fundraising golf event.

“We want to get as many players as possible, and we are also inviting companies to get involved who would like to take up one of the sponsorship opportunities or who would like to donate prizes.

“It will be a terrific day and we want to raise as much money as possible for Danny and Jess. He has made great progress but there is still a long road ahead.”

The Danny Hodgson Road to Recovery Golf Day fundraiser will be an Ambrose (better-ball) event on Monday 24 October at Sun City Country Club, Yanchep. Players of all ability are invited to take part.
