Bayswater City continued their strong start to the Australian Championship with a battling 1-0 win over South Australian side MetroStars this afternoon.

Baysie kicked off their campaign with a 1-1 draw away to Sydney United 58 last week and were determined to put on a show in their first home fixture of the competition.

Despite having to dig in at times, Matty Sparrow's side frustrated their opponents before picking their moment to strike.

The hosts snatched the advantage 10 minutes into the second half. Declan Hughes’ free-kick caused chaos in the box, and Gyles Davies stabbed the ball in from close range.

MetroStars, who had seen Hamish Gow go close on two occasions in the first half including hitting the crossbar, came on strong in search of an equaliser. However, Bayswater held out to the delight of the Frank Drago Reserve crowd and now sit second in the group on four points.

Next Sunday, Baysie face group leaders Wests APIA at Frank Drago Reserve. The NSW side made it two wins from two with a 4-0 defeat of Sydney United on Friday.

There are six group matches in total, with the top two advancing to the quarter-finals.
