Doeglas hat-trick as Balcatta score seven
Perth RedStar got their New Balance NPL WA Women’s season up and running with a 4-1 win over Sorrento FC at RedStar Arena on Sunday afternoon.
Klaudia Houlis scored a hat-trick in a first win of the season for Chris Atturo’s side, who ended Round Four one point behind fourth-place Hyundai Football West Academy with a game in hand. Sorrento, meanwhile, are still awaiting their first points of the 2026 season.
RedStar were keen on a fast start after draws in their opening two matches and led on seven minutes when Jay Coleman’s cross picked out Houlis to open her account for the campaign.
Houlis bundled in a second goal for the three-time champions a minute before half-time and completed her treble on the hour mark when a looping header from a corner was adjudged to have crossed the line before Sorrento could scramble clear.
A fourth goal arrived on 67 minutes when Nelli Johnson’s ball into the box broke kindly for Quyen Doan to smash home and all but confirm RedStar’s victory.
Nikayla Hughes’ nicely struck volley with 10 minutes left gave the Gulls a late consolation, but ultimately the promoted side begin their first season in the top flight with four successive losses.
Only three matches were played this weekend due to the involvement of Academy players in the ongoing CommBank Emerging Matildas Championships. Their Round Four clash with UWA Nedlands was played in March and ended 1-1, with UWA’s Milla Butler cancelling out Chloe Rodrigo’s goal.
The other two matches were played on Friday evening, with Balcatta Etna moving up to third following a 7-0 win over Subiaco at Home Group Stadium.
The Night Series winners put Subi to the sword as five goals in the opening half hour provided the catalyst for the statement win. Jamie-Lee Gale rifled into the roof of the net from a narrow angle to get proceedings underway, before Caitlin Doeglas scored one-on-one past Briana O’Dell after being released by Gale’s pass.
Frankie Murray swept home Rachel Jarvis’ cross for three and Doeglas slotted in an Etna fourth inside the opening 25 minutes as Pete Rakic’s side were rampant in front of goal.
Doeglas’ 20-minute hat-trick was complete when latching onto a stray back-pass from Mia Hargreaves as Balcatta had the game all but won by half-time.
Rebecca Bennett’s long kick ran through for Jamie-Lee Gale to run in and score number six, and Abbey Meakins completed the scoring from a Gale free-kick on the hour mark. The hosts are three points off the pace with a game in hand on the top two, while Subiaco drop to sixth after their third loss on the spin.
Finally, Perth Azzurri and Fremantle City played out a goalless draw in an early season top of the table clash at Dorrien Gardens.
Janice Kiama wasn’t quite able to force home Erin Siah’s corner for Freo, while Lacey Heys saw successive efforts blocked by Perth’s defence who ultimately went on to register a fourth clean sheet in as many games.
The Azzurri could have led at the break, but Ruby Marshall’s effort came back off the bar and Freo stopper Cassie Souza denied Jess Flannery who tried to put low across the goalkeeper.
Substitute Daisy McAllister’s cross was tipped over by Souza after the restart and Mia Yeo’s thunderbolt on the turn crashed off the post. No breakthrough was found, and both teams maintained their unbeaten starts to the season.
