Eagles cash in on Uni's loss at Inglewood
DIVISION ONE
Inglewood United sprung a surprise on leaders UWA Nedlands as they moved clear of danger in the Men’s State League Division One.
Cameron Lord’s team are five points above bottom side Gosnells City after beating UWA 2-1 to make it three games undefeated at home.
Uni’s third loss of the campaign saw their lead at the top cut to one point after second-placed Dianella White Eagles won in the evening game against Subiaco.
Dean Hurley opened the scoring for Inglewood on 18 minutes when crashing in Stephen Christopher’s cross from the left, before Chad Nilson nodded in after some penalty box pinball for 2-0 before the half-hour mark.
DIVISION ONE RESULTS, FIXTURES & STANDINGS
David Molinari’s second yellow card made it tough for Kris Donnell’s side, but they did pull one back when Sam Ince’s shot was blocked to Mark Bauersachs, who put home.
However, time ran out for Uni who have dropped points in their past two games and opened the door to Dianella, who defeated Subiaco 3-0 in their Round 14 clash.
It was goalless until the 57th minute when Albert Luwi rolled his marker and rattled across Subi substitute keeper Navarone Synnerdahl, who was introduced in the first half after Tando Velpahi was forced off after taking a foot to the head.
Synnerdahl then spilled George Ballah’s long-ranger which was deemed to have crossed the line, but there was no doubt about the full back’s second goal when he curled in a stunning free-kick from the right.
Joondalup City remain third despite seeing their five-game winning streak ended 2-1 by Kingsley Westside at Iluka Sports Complex.
Max Adamson gave the visitors the lead when he followed in Sam Mattock’s shot. City then levelled through Ed Wilcock, who headed in a high looping cross from Cameron Stratton. Kingsley’s winner arrived moments later courtesy of in-form Adamson, whose left-footed rocket from outside the box gave Ben Andrews’ side a first win in four games.
Meanwhile, Robert Ferrante was the hero as Gwelup Croatia beat Curtin University 2-1 to move back into the top four and snap a winless run which dates back to 17 May.
Jai Rawling’s piledriver hit the underside of the bar and was deemed to have crossed the line before bouncing out as the home side hit the front. But Curtin levelled seven minutes before the break when Gaspar Becerra reacted quickest after Rocco Liberti saved Rowan Steed’s free-kick.
The game seemed to be drifting towards a draw until Christos Vaenas swung in a cross and Ferrante cushioned a gorgeous volley up and over the goalkeeper. The last-gasp defeat saw Curtin drop into the relegation play-off position.
Elsewhere, another late goal meant Murdoch University Melville won for the first time in three games and kept their promotion hopes alive with a 2-1 win over Mandurah City.
The Dolphins led after 10 minutes when Lewis Warnock’s cross from the right ran for Robbie Galvin to tuck home. However, two goals in the final five minutes saw MUM FC turn the game on its head and ensure Mandurah remain only five points clear of the bottom.
Oliver Fields turned Angel Andres’ cross into his own net for the equaliser, before Ed Wynne-Willson converted another Andres cross to win it with the last kick of the game.
There was also a big result at the bottom as Kalamunda City moved two points clear of the relegation play-off spot following a 1-0 win at bottom side Gosnells City.
Gaston Bazet scored the winner on 31 minutes when deflecting in teammate Agustin Ventre’s long-range effort. The loss was bad news for Gosnells, who are now five points away from safety.
DIVISION TWO
Quinns FC remain top of the league on goal difference after defeating fourth-placed Forrestfield United 1-0. Joel Sollitt got the winner on 71 minutes as the home side finished with nine men following late dismissals for Ben Johns and Jamie Gardiner.
Quinns do still have a game in hand on second-placed Cockburn City ahead of next week’s top-of-the-table clash. The Cockerels won 2-0 at Carramar Shamrock Rovers thanks to two goals in second-half injury time from James Bourne.
There was another late winner at Burrendah Reserve with Tom Lynch’s 96th-minute goal giving East Perth a 3-2 win at Canning City on Sunday.
Ryan McCready and Andy Keogh had Colm Costello’s side two-up inside 14 minutes, but Liam Moore picked up a red card for the visitors, and Alfred Moore pulled one back for the home side moments later. Bill Orr’s red card meant both sides played with 10 men for the second half, yet Canning made it 2-2 on 76 minutes with William Higginson getting the equaliser. But Lynch’s late goal gave East Perth all three points and moved them back to within three points of the top two sides.
DIVISION TWO RESULTS, FIXTURES & STANDINGS
Elsewhere, Balga missed a chance to move into the top four when held 1-1 by Ashfield. Bleron Mamudi’s 63rd-minute goal put the hosts ahead but on a weekend of late goals substitute Fabrice Feuzi Kikuni netted a potentially crucial goal for second-bottom Ashfield in added time.
Elsewhere, Wanneroo City moved clear seven clear of the bottom two following a 4-0 win at 10th-placed Wembley Downs with Abdulla Rogers, Boas Mtwale, Noel Disha and Taiga Kobayashi hitting the target.
And Rockingham City beat bottom side Swan United 3-0 to move four points clear of their opponents who remain bottom with Tom Kinnane, Surafel Yigletu and Dylan Rogers on the scoresheet.
