Female football thriving in remote north
Kununurra Soccer Association has increased its female membership by almost 30% thanks to Football West's Junior Girls United program.
WA's most remote football association has seen 47 new female registrations aged 7-12 across the first two terms of 2026.
The popularity of the program had left coaches Hannah Grominsky and Evie Marchetti struggling to find a venue to accommodate the spike in new players. But their hard work has paid off and the program now runs every Wednesday.
“The response to our Girls United program has been overwhelming,” said Hannah.
“The support from the community has been simply awesome. We're up to nearly 50 registered girls now. The majority of them have never played before or aren't part of our association, so it's great to give them a positive football experience in a comfortable environment.”
The Kununurra SA seasons traditionally run in terms one and four in the Kimberley wet season. However, the Junior Girls United program has allowed the sport to flourish in the cooler months.
“The girls are loving the sessions, and we're really looking forward to seeing them develop into our structured competitions. It's really shown how popular the game is in Kununurra," said Hannah.
Football West would like to acknowledge the support of Federal Government for Junior Girls United through its Play Our Way grant program.
