Floreat recover from late collapse to snatch win over Subi
Floreat Athena and Subiaco served up an early game-of-the-season contender as State League Division One leaders Athena conceded three goals in a crazy four-minute spell before snatching a 5-4 victory thanks to Mohamed Al-Zaidy’s stoppage-time strike.
The thrilling win for Alun Vernals’ undefeated side leaves them three points clear at the top, while Subi remain two points adrift at the bottom despite a remarkable late comeback which saw them almost pilfer the unlikeliest of points.
The fixture seemed to be going to script for Floreat with Jacob Young’s towering header from Harry Lewis’ corner putting the home side up on nine minutes.
They led 2-0 after quarter-of-an-hour with Lewis crossing for Jordan Langley to head in, before Tom Wassholm made it three with only 24 minutes played.
Kaleb Morrison pulled one back for Subi, but Lewis struck from just inside the box on the hour mark to seemingly see Floreat home and hosed.
The visitors had other ideas though and staged a comeback in the final five minutes. Two one-on-one finishes from Tomas Despotovski in as many minutes gave Subiaco a fighting chance and sent a scare through the Floreat camp. And moments later, Subi grabbed a last-minute equaliser as Isaac Scellier poked in a cross from Jack Steele.
But Floreat regrouped and won it themselves as Luis Adlard’s shot was palmed out to Al-Zaidy who kept his composure to put away the winner.
