Football resumes as lockdown ends

Football West welcomes today’s announcement from Premier Mark McGowan that community sport and training can resume from tomorrow (Tuesday).

Mr McGowan said the three-day lockdown for the Perth and Peel region will end at midnight tonight, as scheduled, following no new community cases of Covid-19 in WA for the second consecutive day.

Some restrictions will remain in place for the next four days, until 12.01am on Saturday, including the mandatory wearing of masks.

However, our clubs can return to training from tomorrow with players and officials, but no spectators, which is great news.

Football West CEO James Curtis said the whole of the football community would be thrilled with the news.

“Our 2021 player numbers are at record levels thanks to the hard work of everyone across the WA football community," he said.

“With the recent announcement of the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Western Australia, there was a real buzz across WA football last weekend as thousands of juniors kicked off for their first week of football.

“We had people at grounds across the city and they all reported the same reaction. The clubs, the volunteers, the players and the mums and dads … all of them said it was great to be back kicking a ball.

“Obviously the lockdown was disappointing. But it was fantastic to see most people followed the Government advice. That means for a lot of teams they will have missed no training sessions, which is tremendous.”

Mr Curtis urged the football community in Western Australia to continue to do the right thing.

“Football West will work closely with our clubs as we build towards the resumption of football this Saturday, subject to further advice from the WA Government. This will include any further advice regarding spectators,” he said.

“I ask everyone to keep doing the right thing and listen to the expert health advice to ensure that we can all go back to playing football across Western Australia."
