Football West releases first Walking Football Strategic Plan

Walking football

Football West is releasing its first Walking Football Strategic Plan.

Walking Football is a low-impact, modified version of football designed as a safer and more accessible way to enjoy the game, particularly for older participants.

As the name suggests, players walk rather than run, with the small-sided games taking place over a shorter time period.

The Walking Football Strategic Plan 2025–2027 has been developed in collaboration with the Walking Football community and focuses on participation, connection and health.

Its objectives are:

  • Growing the game across WA and making it inclusive for all
  • Building the profile of Walking Football
  • Providing coordination, guidance and structure
  • Building strong pathways and opportunities for players and hubs to thrive
  • Creating unifying experiences for players
  • Maximising access to sustainable venues

The Strategic Plan aligns with Football West’s broader participation strategy and the Australian Sports Commission’s Play Well Strategy, specifically the Driving Lifelong Involvement pillar.

Football West General Manager - Football David Lewis said: “Walking Football is a brilliant example of how our game can evolve to remain inclusive and meaningful for everyone.

"It brings people together, keeps them active, and celebrates the lifelong connection so many have with football. We’re excited to release Football West’s first Walking Football Strategic Plan and to continue growing opportunities for players and communities right across WA.”

What the Walking Football community is saying ...

Paul Thoroughgood (Wanneroo City SC; Association of Walking Football Australia Inc)
“Having been part of the Walking Football journey from its inception in WA, I am excited about where the sport is heading. Walking Football brings friendship, diversity and health benefits.”

Maria Hulls (Subiaco AFC; Matildas Alumni; Association of Walking Football Australia Inc)
“Walking Football has given me back the passion of the game I have always loved, it means so much more than just playing the game – it’s about friendship, health and wellbeing and lifelong participation.”

Richard Paveley (Wanneroo City SC; Association of Walking Football Australia Inc)
“Walking Football is the weekly connection with my teammates and knowing I belong to a wider community all seeking to remain active and healthy and supporting each other.”

Phil Kelly (Ashfield FC; Football West Life Member)
“Walking Football was my gateway back to playing 11-a-side, somewhere I never thought I’d be again. For years, I gave my energy to football off the field and ignored the part that actually kept me healthy. Coming back to play reminded me what the game is really about: movement, mateship and meaning.”
