Four-goal Floreat open six-point gap
Floreat Athena have opened a six-point lead at the top of State League Division One after defeating promotion-chasing Kingsley Westside 4-0 at Chichester Park.
It was a great weekend for the Athena who were the only team in the top five to win in Round Eight.
Two goals in the first 12 minutes helped Alun Vernals’ side on their way. Tom Wassholm rolled across for Harry Lewis to net before Josh Willis picked out the top corner.
Athena’s third came on the hour mark when Heejun Kim’s effort from a narrow angle went in via defender Nick Koefler.
Things went from bad to worse for the hosts when Xavier Medica was sent off for an off-ball incident, and Jordan Langley completed the scoring when a loose ball in the box broke his way.
Kingsley stay third after back-to-back losses and three points behind second-placed UWA Nedlands, whose five-game winning run ended with a 3-1 loss at Mandurah City.
The Dolphins had lost five in a row and trailed on 14 minutes when the league’s leading scorer Joe McInnes tucked home Anthony Dolan’s through pass for his 10th of the season. But a spirited second-half showing reinvigorated Mandurah.
First, Kristers Zaluzinskis equalised via an indirect free-kick from inside the box. Jordan Callaghan then rolled his marker and curled home brilliantly to make it 2-1 on 82 minutes. And soon after, Zander Basile latched onto a ball up the line to run in and slot home the sealer.
Mandurah move within four points of the play-off places in a compact middle part of the table, while Quinns are currently fourth after a dramatic late comeback in a 2-1 win at Inglewood United.
Inglewood were celebrating their 75th anniversary with a special community day and it was going to plan on the pitch when Rostyn Griffiths side-footed them into a 17th-minute lead.
Both sides were reduced to 10 men for the final quarter of an hour, with Martin Coughlan of Inglewood and Quinns’ Elliot Ireland picking up second yellow cards before the stoppage-time twist unfolded.
Christos Vaenas was fouled just inside the box and Chad Samuels levelled from the resulting spot kick for 1-1. Griffiths then saw a header saved by James Bosdet as Inglewood looked to win it. Instead, Quinns went up the other end and Andrew Flint crossed for Samuels to head home a 94th-minute decider.
Inglewood drop to 10th and two points above the relegation zone, level on points with Cockburn City who won 3-1 against play-off chasers Joondalup City.
Alex Guzman’s opener for Cockburn from Danish Amran’s cross was cancelled out when Liam Peacock headed home Taiga Kobayashi’s free-kick.
Daniel Robinson’s determined run and drive put the Cockerels in front at the break, and Matt Bowen completed the scoring for Cockburn when slotting home Sebastian Da Silva’s defence-splitting pass.
Murdoch University Melville are also mid-table after a 3-2 Friday night away win at Curtin University.
Murdoch went up on 22 minutes when Ed Wynne-Willson’s corner was headed in by Alan Carroll. Curtin then levelled as Jude Baillie poked forward for Gaspar Becerra to roll into the net.
Marc Anthony’s side regained the lead when Gustavo Marulanda was fouled in the area and Wynne-Willson obliged from the spot with a coolly taken penalty.
Curtin were reduced to 10 men after a second booking for Jason Stewart with 13 minutes left, and MUM FC all but sealed victory in stoppage time thanks to Takayuki Sone’s long-range effort.
Becerra replied with an even better strike from distance to make it 3-2 deep in injury time, but it came too late for the hosts to mount a comeback.
Finally, Subiaco moved off the bottom of the league at Curtin’s expense as Tomas Despotovski’s second-half hat-trick helped them to a 5-1 win over Gwelup Croatia.
Jack Steele’s low drive from 18 yards was followed by George Wishart’s close-range finish from Kaleb Morrison’s cross as Subi sat two up at the break.
Leandre De Oliveira’s second yellow for the visitors made their job tougher before Despotovski coolly curled in his first from Ivan Skorich’s pass.
Sam Wilkinson pulled one back from Jeremie Mba’s cross, but Despotovski stayed onside to volley in and then headed home in injury time to complete his treble and the scoring.
In Division Two, Carramar Shamrock Rovers came from two goals down to inflict Rockingham City’s first defeat of the season.
Shaun Mukwevho and Ryan Kennedy had the leaders in pole position to keep their unbeaten run going with goals in the opening 36 minutes.
But Nathan Diaz’s penalty before the break gave Rovers hope, with a second-half own goal by Mukwevho and Cameron Dalling’s stoppage-time winner giving Rovers a 3-2 comeback win.
The result lifts Carramar to third, just two points behind Rockingham with a game in hand.
Second-placed Wembley Downs are also in touching distance of the leaders after winning 4-2 against East Perth.
Toby Robertson bagged all four goals, including three in the final 10 minutes, after Ryan McCready and Owen Paterson had put mid-table East Perth in front.
Ashfield’s 3-1 home win over bottom side Canning also put them in the inter-divisional play-off places. Hanani Ndebele had put the visitors ahead before Michael Mwingira’s double and a Dejan Lewis own goal helped Malcolm Tshuma’s team return to winning ways.
Kalamunda City dropped to fifth after being held to a 1-1 draw by Balga, who are now six points clear of the bottom two. Balga’s Bleron Mamudi cancelled out a first-half own goal by team-mate Seamus Edwards.
Forrestfield are sixth and three points off the top four thanks to their 3-0 win over North Beach, who sit a point above the bottom two. Austin Reynolds, Nathan Costello and Lucas Reid got the goals for United.
Finally, Morley Windmills pulled themselves clear of danger by beating winless Gosnells City 4-1. Noel Disha netted a hat-trick and Gabriel Vasques the other at Walter Padbury Reserve. Armeyas Dejene-Teklu got the late Gosnells consolation.
