Fremantle chalk up first win, Azzurri and RedStar goalless

Fremantle City got off the mark at the third attempt as they defeated Curtin University 7-0 at Hilton Park to get their season up and running.

Faye Chambers’ side join three other teams on three points, although some have a match in hand after the NPLWA - Women’s Round Three fixtures between Subiaco and Balcatta, and Hyundai NTC and Murdoch University Melville, were postponed.

Laura Waltman’s good work down the left led to defender Selene Jimenez Lobato turning the ball into her own goal under pressure from Freo’s Janice Kiama, and Curtin once again put in their own net through Danielle Petch for 2-0 after 18 minutes.

Kiama rounded the goalkeeper and slotted in on 21 minutes to make it three, before two goals right on half-time had the hosts five up at the interval.

Siobhan Longmore’s cross from the left was fumbled by the goalkeeper which led to Freo’s fourth, and Kiama’s cross was then finished from close range by Olivia Trueman to bring up a handful.

Kiama and Trueman linked up again to bring up a half dozen and City completed the scoring with 10 minutes remaining when Mikayla Lyons volleyed in from close range.

This was Curtin's third heavy loss of the season after defeats to Balcatta and Subiaco.

On Saturday, Perth SC and Perth RedStar shared the spoils as the clash between last season’s top two sides ended goalless.

The win keeps Pete Rakic’s side top of the league by a point, although second-place Hyundai NTC have played a game fewer, while RedStar move up to third place.

Carlos Vega Mena’s side had the best chance of a first half where clearcut opportunities were at a premium. Quyen Doan’s cross found former New Zealand International Renee Leota who miscued a first-time effort from six yards.

Doan and Leota linked up again early in the second period, but the latter headed another presentable opportunity wide of the post.

Ellie La Monte had the Azzurri’s best moment in the second half when she found herself through on goal, but Maya Diederichsen made a good block to keep her second clean sheet in a row.

That is how it finished despite a late block from Kate Ritchie’s strike for RedStar, as it ended all square at the end of regulation time for the second time this season.
