Freo score eight while NPLW top three all win

Fremantle City put on a full-throttle performance to blow away Subiaco 8-0 and extend their unbeaten run to four games in the NPLWA - Women’s competition

Four players scored doubles in the big Round 11 win at Hilton Park which means Faye Chambers’ side leapfrog their opponents to move within two points of fourth-placed Hyundai NTC with a game in hand.

It took 13 minutes for the hosts to hit the front as Perth Glory A-League teammates Abbey Green and Tanika Lala linked up with the latter skipping past a couple of challenges to finish low into the net.

They had a second midway through the first half as Anna Powell pinched the ball off Subiaco’s defence and fired at goal, with Lala following in to score after Isobel Robinson’s initial save.

Freo’s third came when Clara Hoarau’s pass was helped on by Lala for Green to curl home, and the same player made it four with 40 minutes played after surging through Subiaco’s defence and finishing into the corner after a fine solo run.

Cass Harvey curled wide with Subi’s best attempt of the half, but the hosts made it a fantastic five at the break as Green crafted another chance down the left with Powell finishing at the back post.

Fremantle picked up where they left off early in the second half as Sophie Meaden’s cross was turned home by Powell to make it a brace for the afternoon.

Janice Kiama forced Green’s corner over the goal line to make it seven and the midfielder added an eighth from close range after Hoarau’s shot was saved by Robinson to cap a fine Freo day.

Subi came close to a late consolation when Stella Zampogna slid wide of the post but they remain four points off fourth place just past the midway mark of the season.

At the top, Perth RedStar had a routine 5-0 win over Murdoch University Melville at RedStar Arena.

Murdoch resisted the leaders advances for 32 minutes before Caitlin Doeglas’ left-footed shot looped up and into the back of the net.

Carlos Vega Mena’s team made it 2-0 when Olivia Wood’s shot was saved by Manon Gebauer and the ball broke kindly for Renee Leota to strike home.

It was three in first-half stoppage time when Doeglas’ instinctive turn and strike picked out the bottom corner to give the defending champions a commanding lead and the league’s leading scorer 13 for the season.

Wood capitalised on a mistake at the back to score for a second time this term, before Reina Kagami was credited with a late fifth which took a couple of deflections before crossing the line.

RedStar’s lead over second-placed Perth SC stays at five points after the Azzurri also won 5-0 at home to UWA Nedlands.

Free-flowing football from Charli Wainwright and Daisy McAllister ended with a confident finish from Jess Flannery, who brought up her seventh goal of the campaign.

Daisy McAllister doubled Perth’s lead with a neat juggle and low finish, and it would become harder for UWA to mount a comeback when goalkeeper Morgan Springer was shown a straight red card for handling outside of the box.

There was still time for Ella Lincoln to blaze a trail towards goal and slot in a third before the break with the hosts going on to add a couple more after the restart.

Annika Stajcic came off the bench to net midway through the second period when collecting Wainwright’s through ball and whipping a classy finish high into the net.

Lincoln completed the scoring and made it a dozen goals for the season with a late penalty after the striker was fouled in the area as Perth returned to winning ways.

On Friday night, Balcatta won 3-0 against Hyundai NTC to temporarily sit second prior to Perth’s win later in the round.

Last week’s match-winner Liana Cook set Etna on their way midway through the opening half when heading in Jamie-Lee Gale’s corner at the near post.

Monique Prinsloo doubled the lead late in the first half thanks to another Gale assist from the opposite side of the pitch.

A fourth win in a row for Balcatta was rubberstamped in the second half when Cook arrived from midfield to slot in after good work from substitute Carys Davis. The victory keeps the home side in the title race, while NTC are now vulnerable to fifth-placed Fremantle behind them.
