Freo, Subi share lead while Astorp leads Hamersley recovery

Fremantle City and Subiaco are now joint leaders in the Hyundai Women’s League Division One following the weekend’s Round Five fixtures.

The two sides have identical records, including points, goals scored and goals conceded.

Subiaco demonstrated their firepower in defeating bottom club Murdoch University Melville 5-0 at Rosalie Park. A hat-trick from Sally Rojahn and two for Amy Buchanan has put the two players joint-top of the division scoring charts with seven goals.

Fremantle had to come from behind to win their game 2-1 at UWA Nedlands. Karina Orth’s effort had UWA in front at the interval, but two goals in the final 13 minutes turned the match in Fremantle’s favour. Stephanie Waycott levelled then Ashlee Byrne got the winner two minutes from time.

Fremantle and Subi are on 13 points, four clear of reigning champions Hamersley Rovers who made it three successive wins by defeating Mandurah City 3-2 on Saturday. Cassidy Moyle opened the scoring for Mandurah, but an equaliser by Royan Norman and a second-half double by 2023 Player of the Year Christiane Astorp saw Rovers open a two-goal lead. Georgia Aiesi brought the home side back into the contest but they were unable to find a leveller.

Finally, Jessica Moreschini’s first-half double set up Perth AFC for a 2-1 win away to Sorrento FC. Jodie Brough had pulled one back for the Gulls by half-time but the home side suffered a fourth loss of the season and remain second bottom.
