Perth Glory retain Gold Fields Challenge Cup against WA Women's State Team

The Gold Fields WA Women’s State Team found Perth Glory too strong in the Dorrien Gardens sun today as the A-League Women’s side ran out 5-2 winners.

Two late goals gave the State side some late reward but Glory deservedly retained the Gold Fields Challenge Cup.

Kelli Brown put Perth Glory ahead inside two minutes when she shot into the roof of the net, and they were two up when Georgia Cassidy’s cross found its way past Rebecca Bennett in the State Team goal.

American Gabby Hollar scored twice inside a minute in the second half as Glory raced into a 4-0 lead and things looked bleak for the State side.

Thankfully they turned the tide, with Perth RedStar’s Momo Sakairi pulling one back after a pass from Fremantle City’s Abbey Green, then an own goal by Baxter Thew reduced the arrears further following good work by Jamie-Lee Gale.

Any hopes of an unlikely rescue act were snuffed out, however, as Miku Sunaga cashed in on a late spill from Gabby Dal Busco to add a fifth for Stephen Peters’ team, who kick off their A-League campaign away to Melbourne City on 3 November.
