Jambinu team forced to withdraw from National Indigenous Football Championships

Football West is disappointed to announce that the Jambinu Women’s team has been forced to withdraw from next month’s National Indigenous Football Championships.

The team was set to represent WA in Queensland for the second time following their efforts in 201

However, due to uncertainty over border restrictions due to COVID-19, the Jambinu side will be unable to take part.

Football West Chief Football Officer Jamie Harnwell said: “A lot of hard work has gone into organising the team, so it is naturally very disappointing to pull out at this late stage.

“The people we are most upset for are the players and coaching staff, who have worked so hard to prepare for the championships and were looking forward to performing on a big stage.

“However, the welfare of the team and coaches is the priority and the uncertainty means the team will not be travelling to Queensland.”

The Jambinu side was formed by the Football West and the Geraldton Sporting Aboriginal Corporation.

GSAC Executive Officer Adrian Bartlett said: “Unfortunately in consultation with Football West it was agreed to cancel the 2021 trip to Queensland for the National Indigenous Soccer Championships.

“COVID rules and restrictions were the main obstacle. All parties believed it was in the best interest for all concerned. We certainly hope our 2022 campaign will be a success and we thank all support staff, players, partners and sponsors for the understanding.”
