Kingsway beat UWA to stay seven points clear

Olympic Kingsway continue to push the pace atop the Men’s State League Division One after they won 3-1 at UWA Nedlands to maintain a seven-point lead.

Raeez Pandor squeezed home a shot at the near post inside 10 minutes and the lead was doubled later in the half when Ciaran Byrne nodded in a sixth goal in five games.

Daniel Harrison picked out the bottom corner for 3-0 as Kingsway won a fifth straight game, and a 10th from 11 matches, while UWA remain bottom despite William Higginson’s first of the season.

The day’s other big result came at Dianella Reserve as White Eagles eased their relegation fears with a 4-0 win over Mandurah City, who dropped from second to fourth.

Stewy Moses’ side led after quarter-of-an-hour through Kristian Despotovski and former Perth SC title winner Kieran Colwell made it 2-0 five minutes before the break.

Mandurah had scored 34 times in nine games prior to Saturday night, but this wasn’t their night. Instead, Daniel Mackenzie made it three a minute after the restart, then Despotosvki got a fourth late on with a gorgeous lob as Dianella moved four clear of the bottom.

Fremantle City and Western Knights both capitalised on the Dolphins’ loss to go second and third respectively with away wins.

Skipper Matt Sparrow made it 1-0 for Fremantle at Rockingham, before Ryan Kennedy struck a brilliant curling effort to tie the scores up at half-time.

Cameron Lord’s side had the final say at Lark Hill though, as Roberto Soares came off the bench to latch onto a long ball and slot in for a 2-1 win in favour of Fremantle.

Western Knights came from behind to also win 2-1 at Rosalie Park thanks to a 94th minute from Dean Hurley.

Emmanuel Langoya continued his fine start to the season for Subiaco when he scored for the seventh time this campaign after his initial shot was saved.

But an own goal by Matej Centrih pulled Knights level and they went on to take all three points when Hurley came off the bench to convert a spot-kick at the death.

Forrestfield United went above Subiaco into fifth after surviving a comeback from Quinns to win 4-2.

Andrew Harold headed in the first on 18 minutes and Noah Appleby doubled that lead when arriving in the six-yard box to force home Rhys Loxley’s cross.

Ollie La Galia made it 3-0 after half-an-hour with a back post header, but hosts Quinns got one back before the break when Harrison Wells nodded in after good work from Liam Hudson.

The comeback was on in the second half when Hayden Doyle’s shot went through the goalkeeper. But Richard Abrams’ side made the points safe despite losing La Galia to a second yellow card when Moses Macauley tapped in at the end.

Murdoch University Melville ended a three-game winless run as they beat Joondalup United 3-1 to climb three places into sixth spot.

Pat Sara’s strike in the 25th minute took a wicked deflection over the goalkeeper to give the home side the lead, but James Oldroyd tied it up when lashing in a loose ball from six yards.

Sara got his third goal of 2022 via a second deflection of the match, but there was no doubt about the third as Taki Nicolaidis’ side countered late on and Tom White squared for Declan Tanna to finish.

In Division Two, Carramar Shamrock Rovers maintained their four-point buffer at the top of the league as they edged Swan United 1-0.

It was a fourth win in five games for Rovers, but they needed Kieran Harrison’s 94th minute header to get there. Swan drop to sixth after their winning run ends at four games.

Gosnells stay second and are unbeaten in four after defeating Kingsley Westside 2-1. Jonathan Hulme’s fourth of the season for Kingsley cancelled out a Conor Kavanagh opener, which was his fourth in three games. Thomas Kennedy scored the winner from the penalty spot 11 minutes from time.

Curtin University have moved above Kingsley into third with their 2-1 victory at Ashfield. Nathan Smith and in-form Kieran Witt bagged their goals either side of the break and it enough to give them the points, despite James Sammut’s consolation.

Joondalup City are fifth and are unbeaten in six despite dropping points in a 1-1 draw at Morley Windmills. Liam McGurk rescued a point seven minutes from time to keep the unbeaten run going after David Heagney’s first-half opener.

Balga were the big movers in the bottom half moving up three places to seventh thanks to Bleron Mamudi’s early goal in a 1-0 win at South West Phoenix.

Phoenix are now bottom of the league after first-half strikes from Dion Berman and Nathan Scully gave Wanneroo City a 2-0 home win over Canning City.
