Knight takes Knights with late double

Stirling Macedonia scored twice in a dramatic final few minutes to down previously unbeaten Western Knights and open a four-point at the summit of the Men's State League Division One.

Ian Ferguson's side are now unbeaten in six and have won five games in a row.

Richard Howles found the bottom corner from 18 yards as Stirling got away to a good start and it was a lead they held until 68 minutes. That was when Dean Hurley capitalised on miscommunication at the back to slot the leveller for Knights.

Five minutes from time Connor Thurston followed in Ciaran Byrne's saved shot to give Knights the lead and it looked like the league's top scorers were going to reclaim top spot.

However, Gavin Knight had other ideas. On 90 minutes last season's Golden Boot winner dispatched  a penalty awarded for handball. Incredibly there was still time for the experienced forward to latch onto a long ball to make it 3-2 and spark wild celebrations for players and fans alike.

Quinns missed the chance to go second as they were held 1-1 by Mandurah City at Gumblossom Park.

The hosts took the lead just before the break when Leon Hudson managed to sneak a shot in at the near post. But Mandurah would take a point south following a remarkable sequence of play.

Robbie Galvin's deflected free-kick was somehow cleared off the line, as was James Paylor's acrobatic follow-up, only for Shane Boyle to be fouled and Mandurah be awarded a penalty which  John Baird converted.

Elsewhere, Joondalup United went fourth after coming from two goals down to draw at Subiaco and extend their unbeaten run to seven.

Subiaco shot out of the blocks with two goals inside the first 20 minutes. Ben Campbell's corner drifted all the way through everyone and into the goal, before Broden Brown added a second from Elliot Ireland's free -kick.

But United surged back to salvage a point as Adam Buckley netted his first two goals of 2021, the equaliser in the second minute of stoppage time to earn the visitors a fourth draw of the season.

Fremantle City dropped down to fifth place as Ashfield ended a four-game winless run with a 1-0 home win. Ali Khateri's first goal of the season was the difference as he found the bottom corner from the edge of the area.

UWA Nedlands and Forrestfield United, the league's bottom two clubs, drew 0-0, while Olympic Kingsway moved two points clear of the bottom with a 4-0 win over Swan United.

Ronald Rixer headed in a cross from Harry Evans on 11 minutes and the defending champions doubled their lead just before the half-hour mark when Josh Whitmore capitalised on a miscued clearance. David Tough's side went on to win for the first time in four games as Chris Balazs headed in from a corner before a late own goal from Chris Marshall completed a big win.

In Division Two, the top two sides continue to surge clear.

Leaders Dianella White Eagles won 6-0 away to Canning City, inspired by David Heagney's hat-trick.

Daniel MacKenzie opened the scoring before Heagney struck twice to have Dianella three up at the break.

Sasa Njegic bagged his first goal of the season and Bobby Wilson added a fifth, before former Bayswater and Gwelup forward Heagney added his ninth of the season to lead the Golden Boot race and maintain Dianella's one-point lead at the top.

Kingsley Westside continue to keep pace with the leaders after they won their seventh straight game following a 1-0 victory at Balga.

Joel Gillespie's 25th minute penalty was the difference at Princess Road Reserve, as Steve Dimitrovich's side opened a seven-point margin on third-place Murdoch University Melville.

That was due to MUM FC losing on the road for the first time in 2021, with Wanneroo City joining them on 14 points thanks to Josh Chivell's 44th minute strike.

Daniel Nocciolino and Daniel Davey gave Curtin University a 2-0 win at Morley Windmills, a result which moved Curtin above their opponents.

Elsewhere, Jamie Gibson scored four times as Carramar Shamrock Rovers defeated Kelmscott Roos 7-0 for a first win since Round One, while first-half goals from Miguel De Oliveira and Jordan Parfitt gave Gosnells City a 2-0 win over Joondalup City.
