Maddington withstand Phoenix rally
Maddington White City withstood a second-half recovery from South West Phoenix to remain top of the Belt Up Amateur Premier Division.
City were 3-0 up at the break in Bunbury thanks to goals from Yohann Crampon, Samir Ramos and Nicolas Pardo, although they had been reduced to 10 men after Mateo Guevara received a second yellow card.
Maddington then had Ramos dismissed on 66 minutes and the nine men were suddenly having to hang on. Lydon Hodgkiss pulled one back for Phoenix almost immediately and skipper Lee Stewart made it 3-2 with a minute remaining. However, the hosts were unable to find the equaliser.
A double from Walter Torres gave second-place UWA Nedlands a 3-1 victory over Jaguar FC. Manuel Dominguez Piccinini put UWA in front on eight minutes, and Torres made it two before half-time. Mabor Thomas pulled one back but Torres quickly re-established UWA’s two-goal lead.
It was a similar story at Gumbossom Park, where Ryan McCready netted twice in Quinns’ 3-1 defeat of Wembley Downs. Liam Hunt got the opener for the Jacks, while Cameron Davies scored Downs’ equaliser.
The other two matches finished in 2-2 draws.
At Coker Park, Queens Park missed the chance of a second win of the season after throwing away a 2-0 lead against Leeming Strikers. Lindon Bridger had given the hosts the lead and a minute into the second half they went further ahead through Kenny Young. Andrew Jennings gave Strikers a lifeline and it was one they grabbed when Dean Couling equalised in the 85th minute.
Joondalup United were grateful for Curtis Wreglesworth’s 77th minute equaliser as they shared the points with North Perth United at Beldon Park. Scott Urquhart struck first for Joondalup, before David Byrne and David Houston turned the match in North Perth’s favour.
North Perth are in FFA Cup action this Wednesday when they host NPL side Armadale. Kwinana United were beaten 2-0 at Perth SC in the competition on the weekend.
