A goal six minutes into stoppage time has preserved Wembley Downs’ 100% record after 13 rounds of the Belt Up Amateur Premier season.
Callum McLeod struck deep in stoppage time to cap a 2-1 win for Wembley over Jaguar FC and take the league leaders 12 points clear of second-place Kelmscott Roos.
Jaguar, who lost the Night Series final to Wembley in April, went ahead on 22 minutes thanks to Paul Sopp before the hosts equalised late in the first period through Josh Chalmers. Then just as it looked as though they were about to drop their first points of 2024, Wembley extended their incredible winning run as McLeod grabbed their second with a screamer.
Kelmscott’s prospects of catching Wembley were made more difficult after they could only draw 2-2 with South Perth United.
Benn Lewis gave Roos the lead on 10 minutes, with James Santa bringing United on terms seven minutes before the break. Ralph Mawire restored the home team’s advantage right on half-time, yet a minute after the restart South Perth had levelled again with Santa bagging his second.
That result allowed Emerald to close the gap to Kelmscott to a single point on the back of their 9-0 hammering of Joondalup United.
Shane Young, Connor Jordan, Andrew Patton and Shane Hickey all scored two, with Andrew Wood also on target. This latest loss leaves Joondalup rooted to the bottom of the table without a point and six adrift of 11th-place South Perth.
There were even more goals in the game between North Perth United and North Beach at Woodville Reserve, with the visitors enjoying a 6-4 win.
Alex Kretowicz claimed a second-half hat-trick for North Beach to take his total for the season to 12 and two clear of the field in the race for the Golden Boot. Daniel Yelland, Ben Reynolds and Clayton Arnez also netted, while North Perth’s goals came from Kyle Jackson (2), Tomas Carroll and Barry Boggan.
Bailee Yeomans was the stand-out in Kingsley Westside’s 4-1 win over Peel United. Yeoman’s impressive four-goal haul lifted Kingsley to sixth, while Peel, whose goal came via Scott Martin, are in 10th.
Sunday’s other match was a mid-table affair which saw Morley Windmills beat Maccabi 3-1. It was all square at half-time, Louis D’Annunzio’s effort for Morley cancelled out by Dion Berman. Substitute Shane Burke put Morley back ahead on 62 minutes and Stephen Kirk made sure of the win near the end.
