Perth AFC grab top spot with five teams still in title race

Perth AFC are top of the Hyundai Women’s League Division One with two rounds to play.

Just three points separate the top five in one of the most exciting finishes to a season in years.

Perth put the heat on their title rivals by beating Sorrento FC 3-0 at Len Packham Park on Friday.

The Gulls made Robert Caruso’s side work for the points, holding out until the 78th minute when Aaliyah Jorquera broke the deadlock. Amanda Smith made it two four minutes later, with Jessica Moreschini bagging the third.

UPCOMING FIXTURES

In second place and one point behind Perth are Subiaco, who beat bottom-of-the-league Murdoch University Melville 6-0. Amy Buchanan (2), Sally Rojahn, Aimee Coghlan and Anna-Lena Dymowski (2) were the scorers.

Fremantle City sit third, behind Subi on goal difference. On Sunday, they came from a goal down to win 3-1 at UWA Nedlands. Rhianna Burgess put UWA ahead before Sephanie Waycott hit a double to give Freo the lead by the break. Lara Giuliani added the third midway through the second period.

Previous leaders Mandurah City missed the opportunity to go back top after drawing 0-0 with Hamersley Rovers on Sunday. That result did neither side any favours, with City now fourth, two points off the top, while Rovers are one place and one point worse off.
