Phoenix rise to the occasion in Night Series final

South West Phoenix have won their first piece of silverware in four years after knocking off North Perth United 3-1 in Saturday's Belt Up Amateur Night Series Final at Macedonia Park.

Lee Stewart fired in a double for the Phoenix as they upset the reigning league champions, with Ryan Risdon sealing the victory bundling home from a 67th minute corner.

Stewart put Phoenix into a 26th minute lead, before Alex Corner finished off a wonderful move he initiated to level on 40 minutes.

But the Bunbury club reclaimed the advantage early in the second half when Stewart fired home a rebound, with Risdon settling the match when he met a corner.

Phoenix coach Nick Carter, who took over at the club this season, said: "It's all about the players. I'm proud of them. I feel like they deserve it.

"North Perth are a tough side, very physical. We knew what they'd bring."

United had the opening chance of the game when forward Scott Wrightson forced a good save from Phoenix veteran keeper Jamie Oakey in the second minute.

North Perth lost key Mauritian defender Thierry Bernard to injury inside the first quarter of an hour, before Stewart got the breakthrough after Corey Barclay's pass.

Risdon had a 34th minute header from a corner cleared off the line by Chris Bradley, before Corner equalised after working a one-two with Brightson and firing in a left-foot shot at the near post.

Despite United taking momentum into half-time, it was the Phoenix who went ahead in the 48th minute when keeper Kody Dvauz failed to hold Barclay's low shot and Stewart followed up from close range.

Phoenix's Kieran Quinn poked a one-on-one wide before limping off injured, while James McPhail sent a free header wide of the post from a United corner.

United had a great chance in the 62nd minute when they broke with a three-on-two scenario but Wrightson took a shot on early lobbing wide of the target.

Phoenix got a third in the 67th minute when Dvauz flapped at a corner and Risdon forced it home.

Ben Cooper played a one-two with new signing David Houston before hitting the crossbar in the 79th minute but that was as close as United got to pulling one back.
