Return to Indonesia opens door for more cultural exchanges

Football West’s first visit to Indonesia since the pandemic should open the door to more exchange trips for teams from the two countries.

The Gold Fields Boys Under 15s returned from the Bali International Football Tournament on Friday, following the closing ceremony the night before.

Football West CEO Jamie Harnwell, who helped present the trophies at the ceremony, said: “These are great experiences for young players, both sporting and culturally, and we look forward to both returning to Indonesia and hosting visiting teams at the new State Football Centre.

“On the pitch, the boys worked non-stop in the heat and humidity, conditions you don’t often get during our season. They adapted well, especially as the week wore on, and were always up for the challenge.

“They also showed themselves to be terrific ambassadors for WA, and they were hugely popular with players and coaches from the other teams whenever they met up.

“Football West would like to thank everyone for making us welcome, especially the Vice Governor of Bali Dr Oka Sukawati who hosted us for a banquet at the Governor’s residence, and tournament organiser Mr Augung Nuaba.

“Also thanks to the coaches Rodney Njirich and Lyle Crompton, physio Mitch Hough and team manager Alex Novatsis for their hard work and professionalism, and the parents who came over to support their boys.”

The Gold Fields team finished the tournament with a 3-0 loss against Fast Bali International. Bali United Youth finished first overall.
