Stirling strike late again to maintain promotion drive

Substitute Hugo Snowden struck a 93rd minute winner as Stirling Macedonia defeated Fremantle City 2-1 to remain seven points clear at the top of Men’s State League Division One.

Noah Shamaki's eighth of the season gave Cameron Lord's side the lead on the hour mark, which threatened to cut Stirling's margin at the summit given results elsewhere.

But two substitutes helped Ian Ferguson's team turn it around. Alex Tanevski's miscued volley landed on the head of Shay Donovan, who nodded in his first goal since Round Seven.

Gyles Davies was denied by Jordan Barbas and Sam Wynne's shot deflected wide as Stirling pressed for a winner. And as they so often have done in 2021, they found the ninth win of the season when Snowden headed in a corner at the back post.

Quinns earlier looked as though they were going to cut the gap with three first-half goals helping them win 3-1 at Subiaco.

Anyuon Dau's backheel made it 1-0 after six minutes and Lucas Triglavcanin struck home a second shortly after as Glen Grostate's side took control of proceedings.

Adam Tong side-footed a third past Teo Brown before the break and that strong first 45 proved enough for Quinns to stay second, despite Ben Johns curling home a late consolation.

Western Knights remain third despite letting slip a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 at Olympic Kingsway.

It was a third straight draw for Knights, but it looked promising in the first half as Dean Hurley's penalty and Alex Kretowicz's strike put them two-up.

Kingsway have shown improved form overall under David Tough, despite a midweek defeat to UWA Nedlands, and they pulled one back as Owen Goodliffe slotted home.

Rene Kisesa then won a late penalty which was slammed down the middle by Harry Evans and that's how it stayed despite Charlie Kenna's late dismissal for Kingsway.

Four goals from James Oldroyd helped Joondalup United move within a point of Western Knights as they beat Swan United 5-0.

Oldroyd bundled in Scott Hoyle's corner for his first of the season and another set-piece led to the second when Joel Sollitt arrived at the back post to finish.

Oldroyd got his second as another long throw was poorly dealt with by Swan's defence. That was 3-0 at the interval and Oldroyd's volley and one-on-one finish in the final five minutes then completed a comfortable win for Nick Jennings' side.

Mandurah City moved into the top half of the league with a 1-0 win at Forrestfield United. Jamie Burns' brilliant curler decided it as the Night Series winners won for the third time in four games.

And UWA Nedlands capped off an excellent week with a third win in seven days, moving them six points clear of the bottom. Pascal Sedgewick's spot-kick was decisive as both teams ended the game with 10 men.

In State League Division Two, Dianella White Eagles gained a further stranglehold on the title and promotion as they won 4-0 at Curtin University.

Kian McGuigan and Daniel MacKenzie struck before the interval and the goals continued to flow after the break with Stephen Musonda and Ryan Pretorius netting.

Dianella now lead the league by nine points after Kingsley Westside fell to a 4-1 home to defeat against Gosnells City.

Cameron Bishop opened the scoring with this second in consecutive weeks, but Darren Francis, Aaron Coslani and Scott Pereira all found the net within 11 minutes to turn the game on its head.

Edward Wynne-Willson added a fourth in the second period as Marc Anthony's side won a fifth straight game to move within five points of their opponents.

Wanneroo City remain third but will rue allowing Joondalup City to take a point after they led 2-0.

Kye Douglas and jack Hailstones scored in quick succession to put Wanneroo in a strong position. Liam McGurk’s penalty reduced the arrears before half-time, and an own goal from Wanneroo skipper Ash Corker two minutes from the end ensured the game finished all square.

Morley Windmills ended a five-game winless run with a 3-1 win at Murdoch University Melville.

Kuol Riak and Otto Van Der Poel found the net in the first half to give the visitors the initiative. Patrick Sara pulled one back for the hosts who finished the game with nine men following red cards to Tom Pellizzari and Patrick Quinn, before Albert Mombo sealed the points late-on.

Carramar Shamrock Rovers moved into the top half of the league with a 3-2 win over Canning City. James Atkins gave Canning an early advantage, which was swiftly wiped out by Owen Coates. By half-time Carramar were 3-1 ahead after Lachlan Park and Rhodes Boyce added to the scoring. City skipper Atkins got his second from the penalty spot 11 minutes from the end, but the visitors were unable to get back on terms.

Finally, second-half goals from Luke Christie and Bleron Mamudi gave Balga a 2-0 win over bottom side Kelmscott, who finished the game with eight players following red cards for Sam French, Andrew Reale and George Ballah.
