UWA's statement win over Gwelup

DIVISION ONE

UWA Nedlands have sent a message that their rise to the top of State League Division One is no flash in the pan. Uni opened a three-point gap with a game in hand on most of their rivals following Saturday’s emphatic 4-0 defeat of Gwelup Croatia.

Iljas Ahmedov got the ball rolling with a fantastic backheel over Gwelup keeper Rocco Liberti, followed by Mark Bauersachs’ cross from the right which Liberti misjudged and flapped into his own net. Bauersachs got his second early in the second half, finishing Ahmedov’s ball across goal, with substitute Mitchell Foley completing the scoring when he dribbled through Gwelup's defence before sliding home.

DIVISION ONE RESULTS, FIXTURES & STANDINGS

Dianella White Eagles are still second but lost ground despite salvaging a point away to Curtin University with a stoppage-time equaliser. Kieran Witt put Curtin in front with a low left-foot finish, only for George Ballah to head Dianella level. After the break, Witt teed up Ronal Onek to net Curtin’s second and they were on track for a second straight win when Witt intercepted Eagles keeper Joel Driscoll’s pass and made it 3-1. Sasa Njegic pulled one back with a low shot which beat Curtin stopper Alec Radonich, and Paul Zimarino struck in similar fashion to snatch a 3-3 draw.

Joondalup City's 2-1 victory at Murdoch University Melville was their fifth straight win, which moved them up to third. Harry Edwards put Joondalup in front early on after he found himself unmarked on the edge of the area and finished well. On 74 minutes, Gustavo Giron Marulanda sprung City’s offside trap to run through and finish for 1-1. But five minutes later, Ed Wilcock won it for Joondalup after a solo run.

Subiaco have dropped a place to fourth after they drew 1-1 with fellow play-off contenders Kingsley Westside. Daler Tokhirov curled Kingsley’s opener after good work from Paul Stewart, while Subi’s equaliser came when Isaac Scellier met Dean Evans’ corner and thumped home a header.

Just two points separate eighth-place Mandurah City and bottom-of-the-table Gosnells City, who beat the Dolphins 2-0 on Saturday with two second-half goals. Thang Sangpichung got the first, breaking down the right and finishing near post, then Vishal Amunugama latched on to a loose ball to bag Gosnells’ second.

Finally, Inglewood United came from behind to down Kalamunda City 2-1. The win lifted Inglewood one place and one point above their opponents into ninth. Farruh Mavlonov’s close-range finish gave Kalamunda the lead at the break, with Inglewood’s leveller coming from Jason Dunphy’s deflected free-kick. Inglewood claimed the three points thanks to Cammron Morris’ looping header. They now turn their attention to Tuesday night's Hahn Australia Cup Round Seven visit to NPL side Stirling Macedonia.

DIVISION TWO

League leaders Cockburn City saw their lead trimmed to three points after they were held to a goalless draw by Wanneroo City.

This allowed Quinns and East Perth to move closer to the Cockerels on the back of narrow away wins. Stewart Mills gave East Perth a 1-0 victory at Rockingham City on Saturday, while on Sunday, Quinns won 3-2 at Canning City. Jamie Gardiner and Tyler Holden put Quinns two up, Bill Orr and Mason Langham brought City on terms, before Cam Briggs netted the third for Quinns.
