Wembley stay on course for perfect season

Wembley Downs are two wins from wrapping up the Belt Up Amateur Premier Division title after they made it 16 wins from 16 on Sunday.

Their 4-1 defeat of Peel United at Butlers Reserve keeps them 13 points clear of last year’s champions Emerald with six rounds remaining. And they could secure the league this weekend if results go their way.

Stefan Hill put Wembley ahead right on half-time against Peel, a lead that was cancelled out by Scott Martin 10 minutes into the second period. Substitute Zac Archer restored the hosts’ advantage not longer after, and Hill and Archer grabbed a second each to give the final score a convincing look.

Wembley’s dominance is such that their current return of 48 points is one more than the number Emerald finished with when winning the title in 2023. Not that Emerald have been slouches this season either, their total of 35 points from the first 16 games is greater than what they had at the same time 12 months ago.

Their latest win was away to North Perth United with all the goals coming in the final 20 minutes. Andrew Patton struck first for Emerald, Kyle Jackson levelled, before Andrew Wood ensured the visitors left Woodville Reserve with a 2-1 victory after notching his 13th goal of the campaign.

That leaves Wood two goals behind Dion Berman in the race for the Golden Boot after the Maccabi striker scored twice in his side’s 3-2 win at Jaguar. Maccabi’s other goal was an own goal, while Brian Kiruja and Majok Mayen were on target for Jags.

Maccabi are fourth, three points behind Kelmscott Roos who were held 1-1 at home by Kingsley Westside. Both goals came early, Sam Church’s effort for Kingsley cancelled out by Isaac Koomson’s penalty.

Ali Gholami and Stephen Kirk scored either side of half-time in Morley Windmills’ 2-0 win at North Beach. Morley are now three points ahead of their opponents in fifth.

Finally, South Perth United beat Joondalup United 5-3. Bottom club Joondalup, who have lost all of their games, found themselves 2-0 up on 12 minutes thanks to John McNeil’s double. That had turned around by half-time as two from Armeyas Dejene-Teklu and an own goal gave South Perth the lead at the break.

Shawn Spozio and substitute Bassie Kamara added further goals for the home side, with McNeil completing his hat-trick in a rare bright moment for Joondalup this season.
