Winning Wembley on cloud nine

Skipper Jack Mellor and Callum McLeod struck to continue Wembley Downs’ perfect start to the 2024 Belt Up Amateur Premier Division season.

Wembley made it nine wins from nine as they came from behind to beat Emerald 2-1 at Butlers Reserve on Sunday. The result keeps the league leaders five points ahead of Kelmscott Roos.

Emerald would have gone to within three points of Wembley with a win and they were first to score through Kevin Hurley on 13 minutes. Unfortunately for the visitors they were quickly pegged back when Mellor levelled, and by half-time it was Wembley who had gone in front thanks to McLeod.

Kelmscott, whose only loss has been to Wembley, also won 2-1 away to Morley Windmills.

Roos striker Isaac Koomson got his ninth for the season to make him the Premier Division’s top scorer and at the interval it was 2-0 thanks to Vaughan Audrain’s penalty. Travis Taylor pulled one back for Morley, also from the penalty spot, and that was how it ended.

Elsewhere, two goals in a six-minute spell midway through the first half by Abraham Taona and Paul Sopp saw Jaguar FC down North Perth United 2-0.

South Perth United and Kingsley Westside played an entertaining 2-2 draw at Challenger Reserve. Wellington Muvunduke got the opener for United, before Luke Coltman and Nathan Griffiths turned thing in Kingsley’s favour by the break. Ayela Santa’s goal eight minutes from the end earned South Perth a point.

There was also a draw at Charles Riley Memorial Reserve between North Beach and Maccabi. Both goals came in the first half, Alex Kretowicz scoring first for North Beach and Aamon Zothner levelling for Maccabi.

Finally, Peel United won the battle between the two bottom teams to leave Joondalup United still seeking their first point. Daniel Fenton, Cristian Mejia and Cameron Crowley got the goals as Peel won 3-1. John McNeil scored for Joondalup but they are now six points behind their opponents.
